Indian-Origin Man in Auckland Seeks Police Help After Viral Cardboard Dumping Video
An Indian-origin man residing in Auckland has officially filed complaints with local police and sought assistance from online safety authorities following a distressing incident. A video capturing him allegedly disposing of cardboard went viral on social media platforms, triggering a wave of abusive messages and significant public backlash against him.
Incident Details and Police Confirmation
The man, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, reported that the episode has severely impacted his sense of safety. According to his account, the individual who filmed the confrontation also caused damage to his vehicle during the altercation, including breaking a rearview mirror.
In a statement to The Indian Weekender, the man expressed remorse, saying, "I have apologised to the Police, I also told them that I am ready to pay the fine (if any) and apologised to the person who made our video."
Police authorities have verified receiving a complaint related to this incident, which took place on April 4 in the Alfriston area of Auckland. A spokesperson confirmed, "Police can confirm they received a report in relation to an incident in Alfriston earlier this month."
Background of the Cardboard Disposal Attempt
The man explained that he and a friend were attempting to dispose of three large cardboard pieces in preparation for a planned function at their home. They reportedly checked recycling facilities in Manurewa and Papakura but found them closed due to a public holiday.
Upon returning, they attempted to leave the cardboard in a grassy area, believing it would naturally break down over time. However, they were quickly confronted by a passing motorist. "Within 15 seconds, a car stopped in front of ours and a man got out with a phone camera, started recording and abusing," the man recounted.
Content of the Viral Video and Confrontation
The video footage captures a highly tense confrontation, with the person recording shouting abusive language. The recorder is heard saying, "Don't come to our country and litter you m**" and begins the clip with "You f** A**".
In the video, the man is seen apologizing and promptly returning the cardboard to his vehicle after being confronted. Despite his apologies, the recorder continued with hostile remarks, stating, "Don't be sorry. Don't come to our country and litter you m**".
Online Spread and Efforts to Remove Content
The clip has since gone viral, amassing thousands of reactions and comments across social media platforms. The man has approached Netsafe, New Zealand's online safety organization, for help in removing the video. However, he claims their assistance has been limited.
"Netsafe told me that they will not be able to remove all the videos since the video is not against community standards," he said. He added, "The video is viral in India as well. Netsafe has only been able to remove a few videos."
He attributes the widespread dissemination of the footage to pages seeking engagement and views, expressing deep regret over the entire incident. Reflecting on the experience, he advised, "I want to let the people know if you do something wrong, accept and apologise immediately."
