Assam Police, BSF Seize 30,000 Cough Syrup Bottles in Major Bust

In a significant anti-smuggling operation, authorities in Assam have made a major breakthrough with the seizure of a massive consignment of cough syrup. Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) jointly confiscated approximately 30,000 bottles of cough syrup, with an estimated market value of around Rs 3 crore, from Sribhumi district. This operation led to the arrest of two individuals involved in the illicit trade.

Intelligence-Led Interception Near Patharkandi

Acting on precise and specific intelligence inputs, a coordinated joint team swung into action on Monday. The team successfully intercepted a suspicious truck at Cheragi, located about 5 kilometers from Patharkandi. Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, officials made a startling discovery.

Clever Concealment Under Potato Sacks

The cough syrup consignment was ingeniously hidden beneath nearly 400 sacks of potatoes, a tactic aimed at evading detection. During the search, the team recovered 150 cartons, which contained the 30,000 bottles of cough syrup. Sources indicated that this method of concealment is commonly used by smuggling networks to transport contraband across state lines.

Smuggling Route and Arrests Made

Investigations reveal that the consignment was allegedly being smuggled from Guwahati to destinations outside Assam. This highlights the interstate nature of the smuggling racket, which often exploits logistical networks for illegal activities. The two individuals arrested in connection with this case have been identified as Mahanta Singh from Hojai district, who was the truck driver, and Balu Kumar from Bihar, who served as the assistant driver. Both have been taken into custody, and authorities are delving deeper into their roles and connections.

Ongoing Investigation to Uncover Larger Network

With the arrests made, a comprehensive investigation is currently underway. Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to ascertain the broader network behind this smuggling racket. The focus is on identifying the masterminds, suppliers, and distributors involved in this illicit trade, which poses significant public health and legal risks.

Chief Minister Applauds Successful Operation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the successful joint operation by the police and BSF. He took to social media to commend the efforts of the teams involved, emphasizing the state's commitment to cracking down on drug smuggling and related illegal activities. This public acknowledgment underscores the importance of such operations in maintaining law and order.

The seizure of such a large quantity of cough syrup, often misused for recreational purposes, marks a critical step in curbing drug abuse and smuggling in the region. Authorities remain vigilant, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
