In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through Assam, a man allegedly hacked his wife and two young daughters to death with an axe in the early hours of Friday. The gruesome crime took place in the Dhing area of Nagaon district, with the accused later confessing to his neighbours.
The Gruesome Details of the Night
Police identified the accused as Emdadul Islam, a resident of Salaguri village. The victims are his wife, Tajmina Khatun, and their daughters, Arhan Hasan and Dilhan Hasan. According to preliminary reports from the Dhing Police Station, the tragedy unfolded around 1 am inside the family's home.
Officer-in-charge Biren Kalita stated that the trigger for the violence appears to have been a domestic argument. Islam reportedly wanted to go out urgently late at night. However, the main gate was locked, and his wife Tajmina, who had the keys, refused to hand them over to him. Enraged by her refusal, Islam allegedly first assaulted his wife.
Children's Intervention Turns Fatal
When the couple's two daughters, Arhan and Dilhan, saw their mother being attacked, they tried to intervene to save her. In a fit of uncontrollable rage, Islam then turned the axe on his own children. The attack resulted in the deaths of all three victims.
Alerted by the commotion, neighbours rushed to the scene. They managed to grab Islam, disarm him by taking the axe away, and subsequently tied him up. It was to these neighbours that the accused confessed to committing the horrific act.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
The police were immediately informed and took Emdadul Islam into custody. A case has been registered at Dhing Police Station under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. The accused was produced before a local court on the same day, Friday.
"We have arrested Islam. Since this is a preliminary report, there is more to it. We will find out why he carried out such a heinous act," said Officer Kalita, indicating a deeper probe into the motives behind the crime.
Investigations revealed that the family was financially stable and well-known in their locality. Emdadul Islam owned a general store, and his wife Tajmina Khatun was actively involved in social welfare activities. Police noted that the couple had a history of frequent arguments, which may have contributed to the escalating tension.
The incident has left the community in Salaguri village and the wider Dhing area in a state of profound grief and disbelief, as they struggle to comprehend the brutality that shattered a seemingly normal family.
