A man from Assam, who was wanted in connection with a theft case in Mangaluru from 2018, has finally been arrested after six years of evasion. The accused, identified as 32-year-old Rakesh Das, was apprehended by the Mangaluru police from his hideout in Assam's Tinsukia district.
Details of the case
The theft incident occurred in 2018 when the accused allegedly broke into a jewellery shop in Mangaluru and stole gold ornaments worth Rs 15 lakh. Following the complaint, a case was registered at the Mangaluru police station, and investigations were launched. However, the accused managed to flee the city and remained untraceable for years.
Police investigation and arrest
The Mangaluru police, led by a special team, had been working on the case for an extended period. Through technical surveillance and intelligence gathering, they traced the accused to a remote village in Tinsukia. A coordinated operation was conducted, leading to the successful arrest of Rakesh Das. He was produced before a local court and later brought to Mangaluru for further legal proceedings.
Legal proceedings
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody, and the stolen property is yet to be recovered. The police are now investigating whether he was involved in similar crimes in other parts of the country. The arrest brings closure to a case that had been pending for over half a decade.
