Army Uncovers Jaish Terror Bunker Stocked for Long Haul in Kishtwar

In the rugged high mountains of Kishtwar, security forces have made a significant discovery. They busted a carefully constructed terrorist bunker belonging to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group. This hideout was stocked with enough supplies to sustain its occupants for months, clearly indicating preparations for a prolonged stay.

Operation Details and Supreme Sacrifice

The army launched Operation Trashi-I in the Chatroo area after establishing contact with terrorists in Sonnar village near Mandral-Singhpora. An intense gunfight followed, during which a paratrooper sustained critical injuries. This brave soldier, Havildar Gajendra Singh of the Special Forces, later succumbed to his wounds at a military hospital in Jammu.

Eight other soldiers suffered injuries primarily from splinters during a sudden grenade attack. The operation had to be paused overnight due to extremely difficult terrain conditions. Thick vegetation and steep slopes severely restricted visibility and movement for the security forces.

Well-Equipped Terror Hideout

What security forces discovered was remarkable in its preparation. The bunker had been carefully shielded with stones lined up outside for cover. Inside, investigators found:

  • At least 50 packets of noodles
  • A full crate of tomatoes and potatoes
  • 15 different types of spices
  • Two bags of 10kg basmati rice
  • Daal and bags of wheat and bajra
  • Two full-size LPG cylinders
  • A burner and dry wood

This extensive stockpile suggests the terrorists planned for a long-term hideout in the remote mountains.

Ongoing Search Operations

The army's White Knight Corps confirmed that Operation Trashi-I continues in the Chatroo area. Multiple teams comprising army personnel, police, and CRPF forces are combing the region. They are supported by drones and sniffer dogs while maintaining a tight security cordon to prevent any escape attempts.

Officials believe a group of two to three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists remains hidden in the area. The search operation resumed at first light on Monday after being suspended late Sunday night due to operational challenges.

Tributes to Fallen Soldier

The army paid solemn tribute to Havildar Gajendra Singh. The General Officer Commanding of White Knight Corps and all ranks honored his indomitable courage and selfless devotion to duty. Army's Northern Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma also paid homage, stating that the soldier's sacrifice would forever remain etched in their hearts.

The army commended troops for their professionalism and resolve while operating under hostile fire in challenging conditions. They emphasized close coordination with civil administration and security agencies throughout the operation.

Broader Security Context

This encounter marks the third such incident between security forces and terrorists in the Jammu region this year. Previous encounters occurred in the Kahog and Najote forests of Kathua district's Billawar area on January 7 and 13 respectively.

These operations follow a major counter-terror initiative launched in December to flush out nearly three dozen terrorists believed to be hiding in Jammu's forest belts. Security operations have intensified further ahead of Republic Day celebrations.

Officials cite intelligence inputs about renewed attempts by Pakistan-based handlers to push terrorists into the region. The discovery of this well-stocked bunker underscores the persistent security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir's mountainous terrain.
