Police Crack Down on Arms Smuggling Ring in Jaunpur with Dual Encounters

In a significant operation on Sunday, law enforcement agencies in Jaunpur district successfully apprehended multiple individuals involved in illegal arms trafficking through two separate police encounters. The incidents highlight ongoing efforts to combat organized crime in the region.

First Encounter Leads to Arrest of Key Smugglers

Acting on a credible tip-off about criminal movement, a joint team from Sarai Khwaja and Baksa police stations swiftly cordoned off the Chhunchha culvert area. Their objective was to intercept suspects traveling on a motorcycle. Upon noticing the police presence, the criminals initiated gunfire in a desperate attempt to evade capture.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, police retaliated, resulting in both suspects sustaining bullet injuries to their legs. They were immediately taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The arrested individuals have been identified as Goodluck Tiwari and Shashank Singh alias Sahil.

During subsequent interrogation, Tiwari and Singh confessed to their long-standing involvement in the illicit arms trade, specifically engaging in the buying and selling of illegal firearms. Police recovered substantial evidence from the scene, including two pistols, multiple cartridges, a motorcycle, and cash amounting to Rs 1.25 lakh.

Second Encounter Nets Additional Accomplices

Further investigations revealed that three aides were accompanying the primary smugglers. Although these accomplices managed to escape initially, an alert was broadcast via the police wireless system regarding their movement toward the highway from the Sarai Khwaja area.

In response, officers from Tejibazar and Badlapur police stations set up an interception near the Kalinjara culvert. When confronted by law enforcement, the criminals again opened fire and attempted a U-turn to flee the scene.

Police returned fire in self-defense, leading to the arrest of two individuals: Rahul Yadav, who suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg, and Vipin Pal. A third accomplice, Atul Singh, evaded capture and remains at large. Authorities seized additional contraband from this group, including a pistol, cartridges, and cash totaling Rs 1.30 lakh.

Official Statements and Ongoing Investigations

Jaunpur ASP (Rural) Aatish Kumar Singh provided details on the operations, emphasizing the coordinated efforts between multiple police stations. He stated that the arrested individuals have provided valuable information about their criminal network, which is expected to aid in further crackdowns on arms smuggling activities in the district.

The police are actively pursuing leads to locate and apprehend the fugitive, Atul Singh, and are intensifying surveillance to dismantle the broader arms trafficking ring. This incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing illegal arms trade and the proactive measures being implemented to ensure public safety.
