The Andheri police have arrested a couple on suspicion of murdering an 80-year-old woman who was a relative of theirs. The body of the elderly woman was discovered in a drain during cleaning work in Andheri (East) on April 24.
Discovery of the Body
BMC workers engaged in cleaning operations alerted the police after making the grim discovery. The body was subsequently moved to Cooper Hospital for an autopsy. Police initiated efforts to identify the woman, as no identification documents were found on her. Her photographs were circulated to all police stations.
Identification Through Bangles
Investigators were able to establish her identity based on the distinctive bangles she was wearing. Her relatives had previously registered a missing complaint and had submitted photographs that clearly showed the bangles. Police confirmed that the woman was single.
Post-Mortem and Murder Case
The post-mortem examination confirmed that the woman had been killed, leading the police to register a case of murder. During questioning of her relatives, the police zeroed in on a couple whose responses were unsatisfactory.
Details of the Crime
Police suspect that the couple assaulted the elderly woman in January following a dispute. After she succumbed to her injuries, they allegedly disposed of her body in a drain. The couple was produced before a magistrate court. Police are now investigating the motive behind the murder.
