Major Drug and Arms Haul in Amritsar Points to Cross-Border Narco-Terror Network
In a significant operation, Punjab Police have seized a large cache of narcotics and weapons in Amritsar, with preliminary investigations suggesting links to organized cross-border narco-terror networks. The recovery, which includes 42.98 kilograms of heroin, four hand grenades, a pistol, 46 live .30 bore cartridges, and an abandoned motorcycle, underscores ongoing security challenges along the international border.
Drones Used for Dropping Contraband, Says DGP
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that the seized items were likely dropped via drones from across the border, indicating the involvement of sophisticated criminal networks. "Preliminary investigation revealed that the recovered narcotics, arms, and explosives were dropped via drones from across the international border, pointing to an organised cross-border narco-terror network," Yadav explained. This method highlights the evolving tactics used by such groups to smuggle contraband into India.
Operation Triggered by Village Defence Committees Intelligence
The successful operation was initiated based on actionable intelligence generated through the Village Defence Committees (VDCs), a community-based initiative by the state government. "The operation is a direct outcome of credible intelligence from VDCs, aimed at institutionalising community participation in internal security and anti-drug efforts," a senior officer noted. Acting on this input, police intercepted a motorcycle in Oothian village, leading to the recovery after suspects fled the scene.
Two Detained, Investigation Intensifies
Following the seizure, two residents of Amritsar have been detained as part of the ongoing investigation. DIG (Border Range) Sandeep Goel detailed that the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and consignment upon sensing police presence, escaping into nearby fields. "A search and area domination exercise in the surrounding fields led to the recovery of the narcotics, arms, and explosives," Goel said. SSP Amritsar Rural, Suhail Qasim Mir, emphasized that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend remaining accused, trace linkages, and dismantle the entire network.
Case Registered Under Strict Laws
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Explosive Substances Act at Police Station Rajasansi in Amritsar Rural. This legal action reflects the seriousness of the incident, with authorities committed to uncovering the wider conspiracy and ensuring justice. The operation highlights the crucial role of local intelligence and coordinated police efforts in combating narco-terrorism in border regions.
