Chamarajanagar Police Implement AI Surveillance for Traffic and Security Enhancement

In a significant technological advancement, the Chamarajanagar police in Karnataka are leveraging artificial intelligence to revolutionize traffic management and law enforcement. The department has installed AI-powered cameras at key locations to monitor traffic flow, detect violations, and identify vehicles involved in infractions.

Strategic Location Drives Surveillance Initiative

Chamarajanagar town, situated at the intersection of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, serves as a crucial transit point for inter-state vehicles. Chamarajanagar Superintendent of Police M Muthuraj emphasized that this strategic location necessitates enhanced monitoring capabilities. The initiative aims to improve surveillance of vehicles frequently traversing the region due to its geographical importance, he stated.

Comprehensive AI Camera Deployment

A total of 14 AI cameras have been sanctioned and installed at seven strategic locations to bolster surveillance and security. These include:

  • Four cameras in Chamarajanagar town at Doddarayapete, Kalanhundi Cross, Somwarpet Bypass Road, and Mudalapura/Mudlupura junction, which handle traffic from Kerala.
  • Three additional cameras at Naripura Junction for vehicles from Tamil Nadu, Uththamballi Junction near Kollegel, and another on Hanur Road.

Each location features two cameras, providing comprehensive coverage, as explained by SP Muthuraj. Furthermore, a proposal has been submitted to install additional AI cameras at six inter-state checkposts to further strengthen monitoring capabilities.

The surveillance systems are connected to a centralized command center, enabling real-time monitoring and management of traffic. These AI cameras utilize Automated Number Plate Recognition technology, capturing images of vehicle number plates and processing them through sophisticated algorithms to identify and record vehicle details.

  2. Real-time alerts to officers regarding potential issues.
  3. Monitoring of traffic flow and detection of regulatory breaches.
