Ahmedabad Woman Dies by Suicide Over Gold Chain Dispute, Family Accused of Harassment
A tragic incident unfolded in Ahmedabad as a 30-year-old woman from Bareja died after consuming poison on Wednesday. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was allegedly distressed over a dispute involving a gold chain and faced persistent harassment from several individuals, including family members.
Details of the Gold Chain Dispute
According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged by the Aslali police based on a complaint from the victim's brother, the deceased had lent a gold chain to a male acquaintance. This piece of jewellery was originally given to her by her sister to wear at a special event. The man, along with an associate, allegedly pawned the chain and failed to return it despite repeated demands from the woman.
Family Pressure and Harassment
The situation escalated when the victim's own sister, husband, and in-laws began pressuring her to either retrieve the chain or replace it with a new one. The brother's complaint states that she was subjected to severe mental harassment by these family members, who continuously demanded resolution of the matter. Caught in a difficult position between her family's insistence and the acquaintance's refusal to return the chain, the woman felt overwhelmed and consumed poison.
Fatal Outcome and Police Action
After ingesting the poison, the woman was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her condition and died during the course of treatment. The police have registered a case based on the brother's complaint, which names multiple individuals as accused. These include the man who allegedly took the chain, his associate, the woman's husband, and her in-laws. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the harassment and the events leading to her death.
This incident highlights the severe consequences of familial disputes and financial pressures, underscoring the need for support systems and legal recourse in such situations. The community in Bareja and surrounding areas of Ahmedabad has been left in shock, with calls for justice and awareness about mental health issues.
