Tragic Incidents Claim Lives of Two Workers in Ahmedabad
In a distressing turn of events, Ahmedabad witnessed two separate fatal incidents involving labourers on Saturday, highlighting concerns over worker safety and mental health.
Woman Labourer Dies by Suicide at Gandhi Ashram Site
A 26-year-old woman labourer, identified as Rita Nisad, allegedly died by suicide inside the Sabarmati Ashram educational complex in Ranip. According to police reports, Nisad lived and worked at a construction site being developed on the Gandhi Ashram campus.
She hailed from Sant Kabir Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh. Preliminary investigations reveal that she was found hanging in a tin shed room, which was set up on the site to accommodate labourers.
A police officer stated, "Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. She allegedly tied a sari to an angle in the shed and ended her life sometime before 4.45pm."
The exact reason behind this extreme step remains unknown. Ranip police have registered an accidental death report and initiated a detailed inquiry. Authorities plan to record statements from co-workers and site supervisors to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
Teenage Construction Worker Falls to Death in Sola
In a separate incident the same evening, a teenage construction worker died after falling from the second floor of a building under construction in the Sola area. The victim, identified as Shambhulal Damor, aged 16, worked at a new building project on New Judges Bungalows Road.
Police reports indicate that Damor, a native of Rajasthan, was working on a ledge outside a second-floor window when he lost balance and fell to the ground. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Sola Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Sola High Court police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation into the incident.
These back-to-back tragedies have raised questions about the working conditions and safety measures at construction sites in Ahmedabad. The incidents underscore the vulnerability of migrant labourers and the need for stricter enforcement of safety protocols.
As investigations continue, the local community and authorities are urged to reflect on measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
