In a significant breakthrough, the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch has arrested a man accused of abducting and raping a 26-year-old mentally ill woman in the Danilimda area. The arrest of the alleged perpetrator, identified as a repeat offender, came after a week-long investigation that pieced together digital and technical evidence.
From Disturbing Account to Police Action
The harrowing incident occurred in the early hours of November 27. The victim, who suffers from depression and is under medication, had left her home around 1 am. According to police officials, she was approached by a man on a motorcycle who, after realizing her mental condition, offered to drop her to a clinic under false pretenses.
The woman returned home at 4 am and narrated a traumatic account to her family. She stated that the man took her to an isolated spot, raped her on a rock, and later abandoned her near a road adjacent to her residential society. Initially, due to her medical condition, her family struggled to believe her claims. However, they eventually approached the police and filed a formal complaint on Tuesday, setting the investigation in motion.
Digital Trail Leads to Arrest of Repeat Offender
Once the complaint was registered, an intensive probe was launched. Senior crime branch officers meticulously reviewed footage from over 50 CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Danilimda. This digital audit was combined with an analysis of mobile tower data to map the suspect's movements during the crucial time window.
The evidence trail converged on Mayuddin Sheikh, a resident of Santosh Nagar. The investigation revealed Sheikh to be a hardened criminal with a long history of serious offences. Police records show over 16 serious charges registered against him, including cases related to animal cruelty. He had previously been detained under the stringent Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) and faced externment proceedings.
Accused in Custody, Investigation Continues
Based on the compelling evidence gathered through CCTV trails and technical analysis, the police team arrested Mayuddin Sheikh. He was presented before a court, which has remanded him to police custody until December 11 for further interrogation and investigation.
The case highlights the vulnerability of mentally ill individuals and the critical role of forensic and technical policing in solving complex crimes. The Ahmedabad Police's swift action in tracking down a serial offender has brought a measure of justice to the victim and her family, while also taking a potentially dangerous criminal off the streets.
