A tragic incident unfolded in Ahmedabad when a 42-year-old man ended his life by jumping into the Narmada canal. The man, identified as Laxman Parmar, reportedly took this extreme step after enduring years of alleged harassment from his wife and her family members.
Police Register Case After Brother's Complaint
Santej police in Gandhinagar registered a case of abetment of suicide on Tuesday. The complaint came from Laxman's younger brother, Rahul Parmar. Rahul filed the complaint against Laxman's wife, Sumitra, and several of her relatives.
The named relatives include Narmada Senma, Urmila Senma, Geeta Senma, and two other individuals. Police have initiated an investigation based on the allegations in the complaint.
Background of the Marital Dispute
According to the police complaint, Laxman Parmar married Sumitra in 2011. Sumitra hails from Ralisana village in Visnagar taluka, Mehsana district. The couple had two children together: a 12-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son.
Marital troubles began soon after their wedding. The complaint states that Sumitra showed unwillingness to live with Laxman's joint family. Because of this, the couple moved to a rented accommodation in Ahmedabad.
However, the problems continued. Sumitra would frequently leave for her parents' house for extended periods. To avoid further disruption, Laxman eventually started living at his in-laws' home in Ralisana for the past five years.
Allegations of Financial Pressure and Harassment
Rahul Parmar's complaint contains serious allegations. He claims Laxman repeatedly told his mother and brother about the harassment he faced. Laxman allegedly said his wife, Sumitra, and mother-in-law, Narmada, pressured him for money constantly.
Despite working a private job and driving a rickshaw in his spare time, Laxman could not save any money. The complaint alleges that the constant financial demands from his wife and in-laws left him with nothing.
The Final Harrowing Day
The situation reached a breaking point on December 23. Laxman called his brother Rahul from Ralisana. He complained about ongoing harassment during this call.
Laxman told Rahul that Sumitra and Narmada had called other relatives. These relatives included sisters-in-law Urmila and Gita, along with two male relatives from Rajgadh. The group allegedly argued with Laxman collectively. They threatened that he would not be allowed to meet his children.
Later that evening, Laxman called Rahul again. He indicated he was leaving for Ahmedabad. Around 8 PM, Laxman informed his brother he was near Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. He said he had been beaten and denied access to his children.
By approximately 9 PM, Laxman made a video call to his sister. He stated he was near the Narmada canal in Zundal, close to Adalaj. During this heartbreaking call, Laxman said he was going to take his life due to the harassment. He told his sister she was seeing him for the last time. He asked her and the family to take care of his children.
Family's Desperate Search and Aftermath
The family rushed to the spot immediately after the video call. They discovered Laxman had already jumped into the canal. After carrying out his last rites and observing the mourning period, the family decided to file a formal police complaint.
Santej police are now investigating the case thoroughly. They will examine all allegations of harassment and abetment to suicide. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and raised serious questions about domestic disputes and mental health.
