Ahmedabad Businessman Files Police Complaint Over Rs 26.5 Lakh Car Rental Fraud
A 44-year-old businessman from Isanpur, Ahmedabad, has lodged a formal complaint with the Sector 7 police station in Gandhinagar, alleging a significant financial fraud involving the rental of five vehicles for use as radio cabs. The complainant, who operates a vehicle rental transport business, claims to have been cheated out of approximately Rs 26.5 lakh in this elaborate scheme.
How the Fraud Unfolded
According to the detailed complaint registered on Friday, the incident began in December of last year when the businessman encountered a social media advertisement. This advertisement was seeking cars on rent for operation with popular app-based cab services such as Ola and Uber. The advertiser presented themselves as running a legitimate business of leasing vehicles and operating them as radio cabs, offering timely monthly payments for each vehicle as a key incentive.
The businessman stated that after being shown bank transaction details and receiving repeated verbal assurances, he agreed to rent out five cars between December and January. The vehicles, which were collectively valued at around Rs 26.5 lakh, were formally handed over for commercial use under a rental agreement that clearly specified the monthly rental terms and conditions.
Initial Trust and Subsequent Betrayal
Initially, the accused party paid the rent for the first two months, which successfully helped establish a sense of trust and reliability with the businessman. However, from February onwards, the payments reportedly stopped entirely without any prior notice or explanation.
Despite the businessman making repeated phone calls and sending numerous reminders to the accused, the latter allegedly kept making verbal promises and excuses without ever clearing the mounting dues. The situation escalated dramatically when the complainant found the accused's mobile phone permanently switched off and discovered that he was not available at the residential address mentioned in the original rental agreement.
The businessman has alleged that neither the pending rent has been paid nor have the five vehicles been returned to him, leading to significant financial loss and operational disruption. This compelled him to formally approach the Sector 7 police station to seek legal recourse and investigation into the matter.
Police Investigation Underway
The Sector 7 police in Gandhinagar have confirmed that they have begun preliminary inquiries based on the complaint filed by the businessman. Authorities are examining the details of the rental agreement, the social media advertisement, and the communications between the parties to ascertain the facts and identify the accused individual.
This case highlights the risks associated with business transactions initiated through social media platforms and underscores the importance of thorough due diligence, especially in high-value commercial deals involving asset rentals. Victims of such frauds are advised to maintain all documentary evidence and report incidents promptly to law enforcement agencies to facilitate swift action.
