ACB Nabs Railway Clerk in Ahmedabad for Alleged Ticket Fare Scam
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) executed a meticulously planned decoy operation at Kalupur Railway Station in Ahmedabad on Monday, resulting in the arrest of a railway booking clerk. The accused, a resident of Khokhra, was apprehended for allegedly demanding and accepting money over and above the authorized ticket fare from passengers during routine travel.
Details of the Decoy Operation
In an official statement, the ACB revealed that the arrested individual held the position of a class-3 chief commercial clerk and was stationed at the booking window of the railway station. ACB officials had received credible intelligence indicating that passengers traveling to other states were being systematically harassed by a railway employee. This employee was reportedly demanding additional payments, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 500 per ticket, on top of the official fare from commuters.
Acting on these inputs, the ACB laid a strategic decoy trap with the assistance of an alert and cooperative citizen. During the carefully orchestrated operation, the accused allegedly demanded and accepted Rs 100 as illegal gratification from the decoy passenger, in addition to the lawful ticket amount. The transaction was monitored closely, leading to the immediate apprehension of the clerk following the exchange.
Broader Implications and ACB's Vigilance
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about corruption within public transportation systems and the ACB's proactive measures to combat such malpractices. The bureau's use of decoy operations demonstrates a commitment to rooting out corruption that directly affects ordinary citizens. The arrest serves as a stern warning to other potential offenders in the railway and public service sectors.
The ACB has emphasized that such operations will continue to be conducted regularly to ensure transparency and integrity in public services. Passengers are encouraged to report any similar incidents of overcharging or harassment to the authorities promptly. This case underscores the importance of citizen participation in anti-corruption efforts, as evidenced by the alert individual who assisted in the operation.
