8-Year-Old Boy's Courageous Call Prevents Child Marriage in Kota

In a heart-wrenching yet inspiring incident, an 8-year-old boy in Kota made a critical call to Childline 1098 on Sunday, successfully halting the planned child marriage of his 8-year-old schoolmate. The wedding was scheduled for Akha Teej on Sunday night, according to officials.

Urgent Plea to Save a Friend

The young boy's emotional appeal to Childline officials underscored the gravity of the situation. "Bhaiya/Didi, please stop my friend's marriage … she is very young … we play together, go to school … she doesn't want to get married, she wants to study," he pleaded, seeking immediate intervention. His call highlighted not only his bravery but also a profound sense of justice at such a tender age.

Responding swiftly, District Childline Coordinator Ramnaryan Gurjar and case worker Archana Meena rushed to the location. They discovered that preparations were fully underway for the wedding of the Class 5 girl. Additionally, a 16-year-old girl was present at the venue and was also slated to be married later that evening.

Rescue and Legal Action

With assistance from Dablana police station SHO Priya Vyas, both minors were rescued and presented before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The CWC directed that the children be transferred to a shelter home for their safety and well-being.

Seema Poddar, chairperson of the CWC in Bundi, praised the boy's actions, stating, "The boy's intervention is deeply moving, indicating his courage and sense of right and wrong helped stop a grave violation of children's rights and motivated child right protection activists, justifying the fruitfulness of awareness campaigns on child rights and against child marriage."

Crackdown on Child Marriages in Bundi

In a related development, the Bundi district administration has intensified efforts to combat child marriages. On Sunday, a judicial magistrate issued four prohibitory orders in recent cases to prevent such unlawful unions.

Within the Bundi Sadar police station limits, two minor girls aged 16 and 17 were being married to youths aged 15 and 21. Tehsildar Arjun Meena intervened, leading to judicial orders that halted both marriages. Officials confirmed that the girls, who are students in Classes 11 and 12, were successfully rescued.

In another distressing case, a Class 10 minor girl was to be married to a 28-year-old man. A prohibitory order was issued, effectively stopping the marriage and protecting the girl from exploitation.

Persistent Challenges

Despite these enforcement actions, reports indicate that child marriages continue to occur in some villages. A flower-garland vendor in Bundi revealed that minor couples intended to wed on Akha Teej were already married off a night earlier, citing instances in Satur village. This underscores the ongoing challenges in eradicating this deep-rooted social issue.

The collective efforts of vigilant children, dedicated officials, and robust legal measures are crucial in safeguarding the rights and futures of young individuals across the region.
