509 Maoists surrender in Telangana, crime rate falls

In a significant development for internal security, a total of 509 Maoists have laid down their arms and surrendered in Telangana this year. The state's Director General of Police (DGP), B Shivadhar Reddy, revealed this data while presenting the annual police report for 2025.

Surrender Details and Ongoing Efforts

The surrendered cadre includes 24 local Maoists and a substantial 483 individuals who crossed over from the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh. Additionally, one person each from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra also surrendered in Telangana during this period. Despite this success, the DGP acknowledged that an estimated 53 Maoists remain active within the state's borders. Authorities are actively pursuing a peaceful surrender policy to convince these remaining members to join the mainstream.

Broad Decline in Crime and Law & Order Success

The annual report highlighted a positive trend in overall law and order. The total number of registered crimes in Telangana decreased from 2.34 lakh in 2024 to 2.28 lakh in 2025. All major crime categories saw a reduction, with a particularly sharp 42.6% decline in rioting cases, dropping from 324 to 186 incidents. DGP Reddy cited this as a clear indicator of successful policing strategies.

The report projected that 2025 was largely incident-free concerning public order, with major religious festivals and state events conducted peacefully. However, road safety continues to be flagged as a persistent area of concern requiring focused attention.

Cybercrime and Recovery: Telangana Bucks National Trend

In the realm of cyber policing, Telangana demonstrated impressive results against the national upswing. The number of complaints registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) fell by 3%, from 85,766 in 2024 to 83,431 in 2025. More notably, the total financial loss from cybercrimes plummeted by 21%, from Rs 1,753.1 crore to Rs 1,378.3 crore.

Furthermore, Telangana police lead the nation in mobile phone recoveries, having returned over 1 lakh lost or stolen devices to their owners through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal.

On other matters, DGP Shivadhar Reddy stated that the state government's order from September 2 for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities in the construction of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) barrages is still under active consideration by the federal agency.
