In a rigorous New Year's eve enforcement drive, the Jaipur police launched a major crackdown on traffic violators, leading to a significant number of prosecutions for drunk driving and other offences. The operation, which spanned from Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday, saw police adopting a strict zero-tolerance stance across the Pink City.
Massive Numbers in Night-Long Drive
The data released by the Jaipur Police Commissionerate reveals the scale of the action. A total of 445 cases were registered specifically under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act against individuals caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Beyond drunk driving, authorities issued an additional 1,293 challans for various other violations of the Motor Vehicles Act during the same period.
The enforcement led to tangible consequences for violators. Police officials confirmed the seizure of 84 vehicles during the drive. Furthermore, 49 persons were detained under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as a preventive measure. Officers stated these detentions were crucial to prevent potential breaches of peace, curb reckless driving, and avoid any law-and-order issues in areas witnessing heavy crowds.
Zone-Wise Breakdown and Traffic Police Action
A district-wise analysis of the drunk-driving cases shows the West district of Jaipur recorded the highest count at 85 cases. It was followed by the East district with 76 cases, the South district with 34 cases, and the North district with 32 cases.
The traffic police unit played a pivotal role in the operation. On their own, traffic personnel booked 218 drunk drivers and issued 1,223 challans for other violations. They also contributed to the vehicle seizures by taking 28 vehicles into custody. Additionally, the police imposed spot compounding fines in 534 cases for immediate penalty collection.
A Strategy of Zero Tolerance
Senior police officers explained that the intensive enforcement was part of a pre-planned zero-tolerance strategy for New Year's eve. The night is traditionally marked by massive gatherings at hotels, party venues, markets, and tourist spots across Jaipur. To ensure safety and compliance, authorities set up multiple checkpoints at major roads and intersections. Mobile patrol teams were also deployed for continuous night surveillance to cover a larger area and deter violations.
