In a decisive action against narcotics, the Mohali police on Wednesday evening detained three young men who were found in an intoxicated state. The incident unfolded in Phase 6 of the city, marking another step in the ongoing drive to curb substance abuse in the region.

Swift Apprehension Near Educational Institution

The operation was carried out by a team from the Phase 6 police post at approximately 5:30 PM on Wednesday, January 1, 2026. Officers were patrolling and checking for suspicious activity in the vicinity of Dr B R Ambedkar College, close to Shooting Range Road. Their attention was drawn to three individuals sitting near a wall who appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

Upon noticing the police presence, the trio attempted to run away. However, the alert officials quickly chased and overpowered them, preventing their escape. The youths were then taken into custody for further investigation.

Identification and Legal Procedure Followed

During initial questioning, the accused disclosed their identities. They were identified as:

  • Jaspinder Singh, a resident of Phase 4, Mohali.
  • Mohit, hailing from Palsora in Chandigarh.
  • Ankush Kumar, originally from Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh but currently staying in Dhanas, Chandigarh.

Suspecting they had consumed illegal substances, the police formally informed the individuals of their legal rights as mandated under Section 50 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused expressed trust in the police procedure and consented to a personal search. Interestingly, this search did not yield any recovery of narcotic materials from their possession.

Medical Tests Confirm Drug Consumption

To obtain concrete evidence, the three were taken to Civil Hospital in Phase 6 for medical examination and dope testing. The laboratory reports provided conclusive proof of drug use, with all samples testing positive.

The medical report detailed the specific substances found in each individual's system:

  • Jaspinder Singh tested positive for benzodiazepine, buprenorphine, and tramadol.
  • Mohit was found with buprenorphine, morphine, tramadol, and benzodiazepine in his system.
  • Ankush Kumar tested positive for morphine, buprenorphine, and benzodiazepine.

Following the confirmation from the hospital, the police formally registered a case against Jaspinder Singh, Mohit, and Ankush Kumar under the relevant sections of the NDPS Act. All three were subsequently placed under arrest. This case highlights the police's continued vigilance and use of scientific testing in their crackdown on drug abuse in Mohali.
