3 minors held for stone pelting at Bengaluru procession

Bengaluru police have taken three minors into custody following an alleged incident of stone pelting that disrupted a religious procession in the city's JJ Nagar area, leaving a young girl injured and sparking local tensions.

Incident Details and Immediate Aftermath

The unsettling event occurred on the evening of Sunday, January 4, 2026, around 8 pm near VS Garden in Jagajeevanram (JJ) Nagar. According to police reports, devotees were pulling a chariot carrying a deity as part of a procession originating from the Om Shakti temple when stones were hurled at them.

The attack resulted in head injuries to a girl who was participating in the procession. She received prompt medical attention and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The swift police response led to the apprehension of three minors, aged approximately 14-15 years, on Monday, January 5.

Community Protest and Police Response

In the wake of the violence, tension escalated rapidly in the locality. A large group of aggrieved devotees gathered outside the JJ Nagar police station to protest, demanding stringent legal action against the perpetrators.

Senior police officers personally intervened to pacify the crowd and assure them of decisive action. To prevent any further deterioration of the situation and maintain public order, the police authorities ordered enhanced security measures across the area.

Legal Action and Political Reaction

The JJ Nagar police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) invoking serious charges. The case includes sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation.

The incident quickly drew political commentary. The Opposition Janata Dal (Secular) party condemned the attack in a post on social media platform X. The party criticized the ruling Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, alleging a collapse of law and order and failure to protect the Hindu community.

Following a detailed inspection of the spot, police identified and detained the three accused minors. Investigations are currently ongoing to uncover further details surrounding the motive and circumstances of the incident.
