In a tragic incident during a demining operation in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district, three personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) were killed and one was injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Saturday. The explosion occurred while the team was clearing a forested area suspected to be used by Maoists.
Details of the Incident
The blast took place near the village of Kodenar, approximately 400 kilometers from the state capital Raipur. According to officials, the DRG team was conducting a routine demining operation when they triggered a powerful IED planted by Naxalites. The explosion was so intense that three personnel died on the spot, while another sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Raipur for treatment.
Security Forces on High Alert
Following the attack, security forces have been placed on high alert in the region. Additional reinforcements have been deployed to the area to prevent further incidents and to track down the perpetrators. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P. confirmed the casualties and stated that a search operation is underway.
Background of Maoist Violence
Chhattisgarh has been a hotbed of Maoist insurgency for decades, with frequent attacks on security forces. The DRG, a specialized unit of the state police, has often been targeted by Naxalites using IEDs and ambushes. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security personnel in counter-insurgency operations.
Reactions and Condolences
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also assured that the injured personnel would receive the best medical care. Opposition leaders also condemned the attack and called for a stronger strategy to combat Naxalism.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by security forces in their efforts to restore peace in Maoist-affected areas. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the IED was planted and to bring the culprits to justice.
