International Coalition Condemns Iran's Blockade of Strategic Strait of Hormuz
More than twenty nations have issued a forceful joint statement condemning Iran's recent actions in the Gulf region, particularly the closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz and attacks on commercial shipping. The statement, released by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represents a significant international response to escalating tensions that threaten global energy security and maritime freedom.
Broad International Consensus Against Iranian Actions
The statement was signed by leaders from the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Denmark, Latvia, Slovenia, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Romania, Bahrain, Lithuania, and Australia. This diverse coalition underscores the widespread concern about Iran's recent military activities in one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.
"We condemn in the strongest terms recent attacks by Iran on unarmed commercial vessels in the Gulf, attacks on civilian infrastructure including oil and gas installations, and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces," the statement declared unequivocally.
Defending International Law and Freedom of Navigation
The coalition emphasized that freedom of navigation represents a fundamental principle of international law, specifically referencing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The statement warned that the consequences of Iran's actions would reverberate globally, with particularly severe impacts on vulnerable communities already struggling with economic challenges.
"Consistent with UNSC Resolution 2817, we emphasise that such interference with international shipping and the disruption of global energy supply chains constitute a threat to international peace and security," the document stated. "In this regard, we call for an immediate comprehensive moratorium on attacks on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas installations."
Practical Measures to Ensure Safe Passage and Stabilize Markets
The signatory nations expressed readiness to support efforts ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and welcomed ongoing preparatory planning by other countries. This represents a concrete commitment to maintaining this crucial maritime route open for international commerce.
Furthermore, the coalition welcomed the International Energy Agency's decision to authorize a coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves and indicated that additional steps would be taken to stabilize energy markets. These measures include working with certain producing nations to increase output and collaborating through international financial institutions to support the most affected countries.
"We will also work to provide support for the most affected nations, including through the United Nations and the IFIs. Maritime security and freedom of navigation benefit all countries. We call on all states to respect international law and uphold the fundamental principles of international prosperity and security," the statement concluded.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Economic Impact
The international condemnation follows escalating military actions in the region. After the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, Tehran retaliated with strikes against its Gulf neighbors and vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. This tit-for-tat escalation has created a dangerous security environment in one of the world's most economically sensitive regions.
According to analytics firm Kpler, between March 1 and 19, commodities carriers made just 116 crossings through the strait—a staggering drop of approximately 95 percent from normal peacetime levels. This dramatic reduction in maritime traffic highlights the severe practical impact of Iran's blockade.
Iran's de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20 percent of the world's oil and gas normally passes, combined with repeated attacks on energy infrastructure across the Middle East, has driven global energy prices sharply higher. This economic pressure affects consumers and industries worldwide, particularly in developing nations with limited energy alternatives.
The international coalition's statement represents both a diplomatic condemnation and a practical commitment to addressing the security and economic challenges posed by Iran's actions in the Gulf region. As tensions continue, the world watches how this multinational response will influence regional stability and global energy markets.
