West Bengal's Green Vehicle Milestone: 2.6 Lakh Registrations in February

In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, West Bengal has achieved a remarkable milestone with the number of registered green fuel vehicles reaching 2.6 lakh as of February. This announcement was made by Amit Mitra, the principal chief advisor to the Chief Minister, during his address at the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry summit focused on sustainability.

Detailed Breakdown of Green Vehicle Registrations

Elaborating on the figures, Mitra provided a comprehensive breakdown of the vehicle categories. The data reveals that two-wheelers accounted for 75,965 units, three-wheelers led the count with 1.6 lakh registrations, motor cars contributed 17,822, and goods carriages, specifically three-wheelers, numbered 4,083. This diverse mix underscores the widespread adoption of eco-friendly transportation across various sectors in the state.

Bengal as a Model for Green Development

Mitra emphasized that West Bengal is emerging as a pioneering model for green development through a holistic approach integrating circular economy initiatives, renewable energy expansion, and water conservation programs. He highlighted several key government initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.

Circular Economy and Shrimp Cultivation Initiative

One of the standout initiatives is the excavation of approximately 800 kilometers of creeks designed to trap rainwater and create a "sweet water" ecosystem that supports shrimp cultivation. Mitra explained, "We planted mangroves along these 800 kilometres of creeks. The leaves fall into the sweet water and that becomes feed for galda chingri." This circular economy project has not only enhanced biodiversity but also empowered women self-help groups engaged in shrimp farming, resulting in an impressive $500 million export of shrimp.

Renewable Energy and Conservation Efforts

In the realm of renewable energy, Mitra noted that solar power projects with a combined capacity of 3,763 megawatts are nearing completion. This includes a significant project supported by Germany's KfW Bank, highlighting international collaboration in green energy. Additionally, land and water conservation initiatives such as ‘Matir Srishti' and ‘Jal Dharo Jal Bharo' are being actively promoted to preserve natural resources.

Forest Cover and Mangrove Plantation Achievements

Further bolstering the state's green credentials, Mitra reported that forest cover in West Bengal has increased by 2,688 square kilometers. Along the coastline, around 15 crore mangroves have been planted, enhancing coastal protection and supporting marine ecosystems. These efforts collectively position Bengal as a leader in sustainable development, setting a benchmark for other regions to follow.
