Visakhapatnam Restores Bangarutalli Koneru Tank for Irrigation

The Visakhapatnam district administration has initiated development works at Bangarutalli Koneru (tank) in Pendurthi mandal. Spread over 3 acres, the tank is being restored at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. The restoration activities include desilting, cleaning the tank bed, and strengthening the bund.

Irrigation Benefits for Farmers

According to officials, the tank provides irrigation water to nearly 30 acres of ayacut land. Once the restoration is completed, irrigation facilities for farmers in Valimeraka and Juttada villages are expected to improve significantly. With assured water supply, crop production is likely to increase, benefiting around 50 farming families from the two villages economically.

Employment Generation and Rural Economy

About 270 labourers are participating in the works every day, earning employment and supporting their families. The tank development works are generating employment for local rural labourers, thereby boosting the rural economy. Besides addressing the irrigation needs of the villages, the programme is providing confidence to farmers by ensuring a reliable water source.

Crop Cultivation and Market Access

The tank is a major source of water for horticultural crops, particularly vegetables, leafy greens, and millets. Many farmers transport their produce from this region to markets in Visakhapatnam for sale. The ongoing Jaladhara–Jalaharathi works are expected to restore the former glory of the Valimeraka tank, helping it regain its water-rich condition.

Farmers have expressed happiness over the restoration efforts, which promise to enhance agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods in the region.
