UP to Construct 76,000 New Anganwadi Buildings

Uttar Pradesh Government Announces Major Infrastructure Push for Anganwadi Centers

In a significant move to bolster early childhood development, the Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled plans to construct 76,000 new buildings for anganwadi centers that currently lack dedicated premises. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued this directive on Friday, emphasizing the urgent need for proper infrastructure to support the state's youngest citizens.

Addressing a Critical Infrastructure Gap

Of the 1.89 lakh anganwadi centers operational across Uttar Pradesh, approximately 76,000 function without their own buildings, operating from makeshift arrangements that compromise service quality. Chief Minister Adityanath has instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive implementation plan to ensure every center functions from a dedicated, purpose-built facility.

"Anganwadi centers are not just buildings, but the foundation of future generations," Adityanath declared, highlighting that these facilities serve children aged three to six years as pre-primary education centers while also providing nutrition and health services to pregnant women and communities.

Modern, Child-Friendly Design Specifications

The proposed buildings will feature inclusive, modern facilities designed specifically for young children's needs:

  • Drinking water and electricity connections
  • Child-friendly toilets with low-height wash units
  • Designated play areas and kitchen sheds for hot meal preparation
  • Separate rooms for health check-ups of pregnant women
  • Rainwater harvesting systems and nutrition gardens
  • Proper teaching-learning arrangements

Innovative Implementation Strategy

The Chief Minister outlined several strategic approaches for the construction initiative:

  1. Pre-fabricated construction models to accelerate building timelines
  2. Utilization of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds alongside state government financial assistance
  3. Integration with primary school premises wherever possible to create "one-stop centers" for education, nutrition, and health services
  4. Development of standard designs and detailed action plans by officials

Strengthening Early Childhood Development

Adityanath emphasized that safe, clean, and modern facilities are essential for children's development and represent the government's top priority. The initiative directly supports the "Swasth Bachpan-Samarth UP" mission, aiming to create healthier childhoods that contribute to a more capable Uttar Pradesh.

Officials confirmed that the proposed model prioritizes integrated access to multiple services, recognizing that anganwadi centers serve as critical touchpoints for early education, nutritional support, and community health monitoring. By addressing the infrastructure deficit, the government aims to significantly improve service delivery to vulnerable populations across the state.
