Major Infrastructure Boost: Rs 1,105 Crore Rishikesh Bypass Gets Green Light
In a significant development aimed at resolving chronic traffic issues, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has granted full approval for a four-lane bypass project in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The project, valued at Rs 1,105.8 crore, is designed to provide much-needed relief to residents, pilgrims, and tourists who frequently endure extensive traffic snarls, particularly during the Char Dham Yatra season and long weekends.
Project Details and Strategic Route
The approved bypass will span approximately 12.7 kilometers along National Highway 7 (NH-7), connecting the Tinpani flyover at kilometer 529.750 to the Kharasote bridge at kilometer 542.5. The route will strategically pass through the villages of Bhattowala and Dhalwala, effectively diverting through traffic away from the congested core areas of Rishikesh.
Execution and Financial Framework: The project will be implemented in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode, with tenders to be invited through a transparent e-tendering process. Funding will be sourced from the Government of India's budget allocation for the financial year 2025-26. The regional officer based in Dehradun has been appointed as the drawing and disbursing officer to oversee financial disbursements and project drawings.
Addressing Persistent Traffic Woes
Rishikesh, renowned as a hub for yoga, river-based activities, and adventure tourism, experiences heavy vehicular flow throughout the year. The town also serves as a critical transit point for pilgrims heading to the Char Dham shrines and other destinations in the Garhwal region. This constant influx often results in severe congestion, causing journey delays of several hours, especially during peak travel periods such as festivals and holiday seasons.
The newly approved bypass is expected to significantly decongest the town's main roads, facilitating smoother movement for both local commuters and visitors.
Cost Revisions and Strict Timelines
The ministry's approval follows a series of cost revisions. Initially estimated at Rs 1,151.2 crore, the project cost was first revised down to Rs 1,139.4 crore before the final approval was secured at Rs 1,105.8 crore. The approval mandates a strict completion timeline of three years, with explicit instructions that no cost or time overruns will be tolerated. All construction activities must adhere to prescribed guidelines to ensure quality and efficiency.
Government Endorsement and Broader Impact
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the approval, highlighting the state's ongoing efforts to enhance road connectivity. He stated, "Upon completion of the Rishikesh Bypass project, traffic pressure in the area will reduce, providing relief from persistent traffic jams. This will benefit local citizens and greatly convenience Char Dham Yatra pilgrims and tourism activities."
Dhami further described the project as "an important step towards the overall development and better connectivity of Uttarakhand," emphasizing its potential to improve mobility in and around Rishikesh while bolstering the local economy and supporting the tourism sector.
This infrastructure initiative represents a proactive measure to tackle transportation challenges in one of Uttarakhand's most frequented towns, promising enhanced travel experiences and economic benefits for the region.
