Punjab Government Unveils Major Budget Allocations for Rural and Urban Development
In a significant announcement, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema detailed the state's budget allocations, focusing on substantial investments in rural employment, housing, and infrastructure. The budget includes a robust Rs 1,500 crore for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme, aimed at boosting rural livelihoods and employment opportunities across the state.
Housing and Urban Development Initiatives
Cheema highlighted a major push for housing, with Rs 800 crore allocated to construct 1 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin). Additionally, the municipal development fund has been increased fourfold to Rs 1,000 crore, signaling a strong commitment to urban infrastructure. For the housing and urban development sector as a whole, a total of Rs 7,257 crore was proposed, covering various projects to enhance living standards.
Key urban projects include Rs 500 crore for a canal-based surface water supply project in Ludhiana and Amritsar, and Rs 665 crore for AMRUT 2.0 initiatives. These efforts are designed to improve water accessibility and urban amenities, addressing critical needs in growing cities.
Infrastructure and Power Sector Boost
The budget also emphasizes infrastructure development, with allocations for roads, bridges, and public buildings doubling to Rs 5,440 crore. This funding supports projects under Plan Roads, PMGSY-III, and the central road and infrastructure fund, aiming to enhance connectivity and public facilities.
In the power sector, Cheema introduced the "Mission Roshan Punjab" initiative, backed by a Rs 5,000 crore investment. This plan focuses on modernizing the electricity distribution network through new substations and 25,000 kilometres of power lines, targeting improved reliability and efficiency in power supply.
Water Resources and Youth Engagement
Water management receives significant attention, with Rs 2,971 crore allocated to optimize canal networks. The government aims to double canal irrigation capacity to 7 million acres by the end of the year, supporting agricultural productivity and water conservation.
For youth engagement, Cheema announced an investment of Rs 1,791 crore in sports infrastructure. This includes plans to build 6,000 new village playgrounds, establish 5,000 indoor gyms, and organize adventure sports camps, fostering physical activity and community development.
Economic and Transport Expansion
The budget includes Rs 500 crore for fiscal incentives and provisions for one-time settlement (OTS) schemes, aiding economic stability and debt resolution. Cheema also noted that Punjab achieved the top rank in the national Mining Readiness Index, with mining revenue doubling to over Rs 500 crore, reflecting growth in the sector.
Transportation will see expansion with the addition of 1,279 new buses, enhancing public transit options and mobility across the state. These measures collectively aim to drive economic growth and improve quality of life for residents.
