Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation conducts waste management awareness drive across four wards
Dibrugarh waste management awareness drive held in four wards

Dibrugarh: In a concerted effort to foster responsible waste management among its residents, the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC), in partnership with Shrishti NGO, conducted an awareness programme on waste management across several wards of the city, including Ward 18, 17, 12 and 8, on Sunday.

The initiative has gained significance with Dibrugarh being projected as the second capital of Assam and undergoing rapid urban development.

During the programme, residents were sensitised about the importance of proper source segregation of waste into four categories — wet, dry, hazardous and special care. The team explained the environmental and health benefits of responsible waste management and encouraged households to adopt regular segregation practices.

Residents were advised against throwing plastic bags, bottles and other waste materials into drains, with officials explaining that such practices lead to blockages, waterlogging and pollution — issues that have become increasingly pressing for the city during the monsoon season.

The programme also included a demonstration of simple home composting methods to convert wet waste into useful manure, aimed at reducing the overall burden of waste disposal while promoting sustainability at the household level.

DMC mayor Saikat Patra said the awareness drive would continue across other parts of the city in the coming days. “Waste management begins at home. If every household segregates its waste, it reduces the burden on our collection and disposal systems and helps keep our city clean. This awareness drive is an ongoing effort, and we will continue to reach out to more wards in the days ahead,” he added.

A representative of Shrishti NGO said community participation was central to the success of such programmes. “We aim to make residents active partners in keeping Dibrugarh clean. Simple practices like segregating waste at source and composting wet waste at home can make a huge difference,” the representative added.

Residents across the four wards actively participated in the programme and appreciated the practical guidance provided by the team.
