Niti Aayog Greenlights Rs 40,000 Crore Growth Hub for Pune Metropolitan Region

In a significant development for urban planning, Minister Madhuri Misal announced on Wednesday that Niti Aayog has approved a massive Rs 40,000 crore "Growth Hub" plan for the Pune Metropolitan Region. This announcement came in response to a query raised by Bhosari BJP MLA Mahesh Landge during the assembly session, highlighting the pressing infrastructure needs of the rapidly expanding area.

Addressing Critical Infrastructure Gaps

MLA Mahesh Landge pointed out that regions under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), including Pimpri Chinchwad and surrounding villages, are experiencing swift growth but suffer from inadequate infrastructure. Despite increasing investments from multinational corporations and a rising population, commuters face severe traffic congestion and poor connectivity. "Commuters often spend two to two-and-a-half hours in traffic on the Pune-Nashik highway," Landge stated, underscoring the daily struggles of residents.

Additionally, Landge flagged environmental concerns, noting pollution in the Indrayani and Pavana rivers. He emphasized that most gram panchayats along these waterways lack sewage treatment plants (STPs), necessitating financial assistance from the state government to build essential infrastructure.

Comprehensive Development Initiatives

Minister Misal detailed the government's collaborative efforts with Niti Aayog for the region's holistic development. "The Growth Hub plan will focus on Metro connectivity, roads, industrial and corporate infrastructure, and other key issues," she explained. Work has already commenced on setting up 39 STPs along the rivers, with Rs 674 crore sanctioned for this critical project. A comprehensive traffic plan has been prepared, and connectivity plans for growth centers and industrial corridors are currently underway.

Power Outages and Planning Deficiencies

Highlighting further challenges, Landge mentioned that industrial areas such as Chakan and Bhosari MIDC frequently experience power outages, adversely affecting local businesses. He also criticized the absence of a formal development plan for PMRDA, which has led to unauthorized constructions and plotting. "New residential projects are emerging, but there is no proper planning for water supply. Drinking water scarcity and poor quality remain major concerns," he added, calling for urgent action.

Metro Expansion and Ring Road Projects

On the transportation front, Minister Misal provided updates on Metro expansion timelines:

  • The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation–Nigdi line is expected to be completed by 2027.
  • The Swargate–Katraj route is likely to be operational by 2029.
  • The Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro line is anticipated to be functional this year.

The government is also advancing two ring road projects: one by PMRDA and another by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Officials reported that approximately 78% of the MSRDC ring road project has been completed, while land acquisition for the PMRDC ring road is still in progress.

Future Steps and Review

To ensure effective implementation, Minister Misal announced plans to hold a meeting with local public representatives within two weeks. This session aims to review regional issues comprehensively, with a report to be submitted to the chief minister for further action, ensuring that the Growth Hub plan addresses all critical infrastructure needs in the Pune Metropolitan Region.
