Kerala CM Announces Free Bus Travel for Women, Elderly Dept

In a significant welfare push after taking oath, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced free bus travel for women across the state. The initiative aims to enhance mobility and economic participation of women, reducing their travel expenses. Additionally, the government will establish a separate department for the elderly to address their specific needs, including healthcare, social security, and recreational facilities.

Free Bus Travel for Women

The free bus travel scheme will be implemented on all state-run buses, covering both city and long-distance routes. Women can avail of this facility by showing their identity cards. The state government will allocate funds to compensate the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) for the revenue loss. This move is expected to benefit millions of women, especially those from low-income households, enabling them to access education, employment, and other opportunities more easily.

Department for the Elderly

Chief Minister Satheesan also announced the creation of a dedicated department for the elderly, which will coordinate various welfare programs. The department will focus on pension schemes, healthcare services, and old-age homes. A helpline and mobile app will be launched to provide information and assistance. The government plans to set up senior citizen clubs in every panchayat to promote social engagement and well-being.

Other Welfare Measures

In addition to these initiatives, the state government will increase the pension for widows and persons with disabilities. A new housing scheme for the homeless is also in the pipeline. The chief minister emphasized that these measures reflect the government's commitment to inclusive development and social justice.

Reactions and Implementation

Women's groups and senior citizen associations have welcomed the announcements. However, opposition parties have questioned the financial viability of the schemes. The government has assured that necessary funds will be arranged through efficient tax collection and rationalization of expenditure. The free bus travel scheme is expected to be rolled out within three months, while the department for the elderly will be set up after the assembly session.
