ITBP and Uttarakhand Horticulture Council Forge Pact to Supply Local Produce to Border Forces

In a significant step to bolster the economic resilience of Uttarakhand's border regions, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) and the Uttarakhand Horticulture Council formalized a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday. This agreement, established under the Vibrant Village Programme, mandates the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables sourced directly from local farmers to ITBP battalions stationed across the state.

Expanding a Successful Supply Chain Model

This new MoU builds upon an existing collaborative framework between the two entities, which previously focused on the procurement of meat, fish, and poultry. Official reports indicate that the earlier arrangement has already facilitated purchases totaling an impressive Rs 14.7 crore, demonstrating a proven track record of economic impact.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the dual benefits of this initiative. He stated, "Through this agreement, the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables at the local level will be ensured for the ITBP jawans deployed in the state. On one hand, this will provide quality and nutritious food items to our jawans, while on the other hand, the state's farmers will be able to get fair prices for their produce."

Strategic Sourcing from Border Districts

The procurement under this pact will be strategically sourced from remote and border districts, including:

  • Chamoli
  • Uttarkashi
  • Pithoragarh
  • Champawat
  • Dehradun

This targeted approach is designed to directly uplift farmers in these often hard-to-reach areas by providing them with a stable and reliable market outlet. By reducing the logistical and market access challenges these farmers typically face, the agreement aims to significantly improve their economic conditions.

Aligning with Broader State Objectives

Chief Minister Dhami further elaborated that this arrangement aligns seamlessly with the state government's broader push to promote locally produced goods. It offers farmers a more consistent and equitable platform to market their agricultural output. The government remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the interests of farmers while simultaneously ensuring the welfare and nutritional needs of the security personnel stationed in remote border posts.

This initiative represents a holistic model of development, where national security needs and local economic growth are synergistically addressed, fostering sustainability and resilience in Uttarakhand's frontier communities.
