Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made a strong plea for the state's apple growers on Thursday. He met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi to discuss the issue.
Urgent Call for Protection
Sukhu advocated fiercely for the interests of Himachal's apple farmers. He urged the central government to take immediate action. The chief minister demanded a 100% import duty on apples entering India.
He also called for a seasonal ban on imports during peak production months. Sukhu specifically requested a prohibition from July to November each year.
Impact of Foreign Imports
Sukhu highlighted the severe impact of foreign apple imports on the state's economy. He spoke on behalf of over 2.5 lakh apple growers across Himachal Pradesh.
The chief minister expressed serious concern about the free trade agreement with New Zealand. He noted that apple imports have increased 2.5 times over the past decade.
Duty concessions have depressed prices for locally stored apples. This situation threatens the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers in the region.
Special Category Status Sought
Sukhu demanded that apples be placed under a 'Special Category'. This move would protect domestic producers from unfair international competition.
He sought quantitative restrictions on imports throughout the year. The chief minister also requested a steep duty hike during off-season months.
These measures aim to curb the dumping of foreign produce in Indian markets. Sukhu emphasized the need to safeguard Himachal's apple-based economy.
Economic Significance
Himachal's apple industry generates nearly Rs 4,500 crore annually. The sector provides employment worth 10 lakh man-days to local communities.
Apple cultivation forms the backbone of the state's agricultural economy. Protecting this industry is crucial for rural livelihoods and economic stability.
Meeting with Health Minister
Later on Thursday, Sukhu also met Union Health Minister JP Nadda. He sought central support for strengthening health infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh.
The chief minister requested assistance in implementing health schemes across the state. He emphasized the need for improved healthcare facilities in remote areas.
Sukhu's discussions in New Delhi covered both agricultural and health priorities. His meetings focused on securing central government support for key state initiatives.
