Assam Government Announces Major PNG Connection Drive Amid Global Energy Concerns

In a significant move to bolster energy security and provide reliable alternatives to traditional cooking fuels, the Assam government has unveiled an ambitious plan to install approximately 12,500 new piped natural gas (PNG) connections across the state by June. This initiative comes at a critical time when global LPG supply chains face potential disruptions due to ongoing conflicts in West Asia, highlighting the state's proactive approach to ensuring uninterrupted energy access for its residents.

Strategic Rollout Across Seven Key Districts

The food, public distribution, and consumer affairs department issued a detailed public notice on Wednesday, outlining the comprehensive rollout strategy. The new PNG connections will be established in about 64 carefully selected locations spanning seven districts: Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, and Sonitpur. This targeted expansion focuses on areas where the necessary gas pipeline infrastructure is already operational, ensuring efficient and timely implementation.

The decision follows a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, who convened with the managing directors and CEOs of the three key agencies responsible for PNG projects in Assam: Assam Gas Company Ltd (AGCL), Purba Bharati Gas Pvt. Ltd (PBGPL), and North East Gas Distribution Company Ltd (NEGDCL). This collaborative effort underscores the government's commitment to a coordinated and effective execution of the plan.

Streamlined Application Process for Consumers

Chief Secretary Ravi Kota emphasized the user-friendly approach designed to facilitate easy access for consumers. Residents in the notified localities can apply for PNG connections through multiple convenient channels. These include scanning the QR codes provided in the official public notice, contacting the implementing agencies directly, or utilizing the dedicated toll-free helpline. This multi-pronged application system aims to remove barriers and encourage widespread adoption.

"This initiative is strategically designed to provide a safe, cost-effective, and uninterrupted alternative to conventional LPG cylinders," Kota stated. "Beyond immediate consumer benefits, it significantly enhances overall energy security and contributes to an improved ease of living for the people of Assam."

Detailed Distribution and Implementation Targets

The 12,500 new connections will be distributed among the three agencies with clear, district-specific targets:

  • Purba Bharati Gas Pvt. Ltd (PBGPL) will provide 6,000 connections in Guwahati.
  • North East Gas Distribution Company Ltd (NEGDCL) is tasked with installing 1,500 connections in Tezpur, located within Sonitpur district.
  • Assam Gas Company Ltd (AGCL) will roll out 5,000 connections across the districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Golaghat.

PBGPL CEO Ripunjay Phukan confirmed the aggressive timeline, stating, "We have set a firm target to provide all these connections by June. Our teams are already intensifying their efforts to meet this goal." He also noted that consumers will need to complete certain formalities, including the submission of required security deposits, to obtain their connections.

Building on Existing PNG Infrastructure

This expansion builds upon the existing PNG network in the state. PBGPL currently operates 180 active PNG connections in Guwahati's Geetanagar area, a project inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a year ago. Additionally, the company manages a substantial network of 2,500 connections in Silchar, located in the Barak Valley region. This existing foundation provides a proven operational model and technical expertise for the rapid scale-up planned across the seven new districts.

The Assam government's decisive action to rapidly expand PNG infrastructure represents a forward-looking energy policy. By proactively addressing potential LPG supply vulnerabilities linked to international conflicts, the state is not only securing a reliable domestic energy alternative but also promoting a cleaner, safer, and more convenient cooking fuel solution for thousands of households.
