Anganwadi Workers in Khanapur Protest Introduction of LKG and UKG in Govt Schools
In Khanapur taluk, the Anganwadi Workers’ and Helpers’ Association submitted a memorandum to local tahsildar Dundappa Komar on Monday, expressing concerns over the introduction of LKG and UKG classes in government primary schools and its impact on anganwadi centres.
The association highlighted that over 380 anganwadi centres are functioning in Khanapur taluk, with around 40 centres equipped with televisions, books, and other teaching materials to conduct pre-primary classes. However, the education department’s decision to start LKG and UKG in government schools has reportedly led to a decline in enrolment at anganwadi centres, triggering concerns about job security. The association urged the government to clarify its stand on the future of anganwadi staff in light of these developments.
Demand for Menstrual Leave
Another key demand placed before the authorities was the grant of three days of special leave per month for anganwadi workers and helpers during their menstrual cycle, on par with benefits extended to women employees in certain government departments.
The memorandum was submitted in the presence of AITUC state president B Hamzad, state secretary Jayama, state vice-president Mumtaz Begum, state leader Janardhan, and taluk president Megha Mitari, who addressed the gathering. More than 500 anganwadi workers and helpers participated in the protest.
The association has requested the tahsildar to forward the memorandum to the department concerned, expressing hope that the government will take a favourable decision. Copies of the memorandum were also submitted to the child development project officer in Khanapur and the department of women and child development.
