Heavy 2025 Rains Wreak Havoc on Goa's Agricultural Sector
Untimely, heavy, and incessant rainfall during the second half of 2025 severely impacted farmers across Goa. Official data shared at the ongoing assembly session reveals the scale of the damage.
Widespread Damage Across Talukas
The relentless rains affected a total of 4,136 farmers. Over 800 hectares of precious agricultural land suffered damage during this period. The state government identified several regions as particularly hard-hit.
Bicholim and Mapusa in North Goa faced significant losses. Canacona and Quepem in South Goa also ranked among the worst-affected areas. The estimated crop loss paints a grim picture of the challenges faced by the farming community.
Compensation Disbursement Progress
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant addressed the issue while replying to a starred question in the assembly. The question was tabled by Aldona Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira and Fatorda GFP legislator Vijai Sardesai.
Sawant provided a detailed update on compensation efforts. "Crop compensation to approximately 95% of farmers who applied with krishi cards for crop loss has been disbursed," he stated confidently.
The chief minister assured that disbursals to farmers who applied late would be completed within one month. He also addressed cases where bank account details did not match official records.
"Disbursements to applicants whose bank account details are not matching will be completed once correct bank details are submitted by them," Sawant explained.
Scheme Details and Regional Impact
The state government provides crop compensation to farmers in Goa who hold krishi cards. This support falls under the Shetkari Aadhar Nidhi scheme, a crucial safety net for the agricultural community.
Among the most affected regions, Mapusa stood out with particularly severe damage. Heavy and incessant rain impacted 1,251 farmers in this area alone. The deluge damaged 459.5 hectares of agricultural land in Mapusa.
The crop loss compensation for Mapusa farmers is estimated to be Rs 58 lakh. This substantial figure underscores the economic toll exacted by the unseasonal weather.
Non-Krishi Card Holders and Least Affected Area
The chief minister also addressed the situation of farmers without krishi cards. "The cases of non-krishi card holders whose crops were damaged during the second half of the 2025-26 financial year have been submitted for state government approval," he revealed.
These cases, specifically from October 2025, will be settled once approval is received. This demonstrates the government's effort to include all affected farmers in the compensation process.
In contrast to the heavily impacted regions, Dharbandora emerged as the least affected area. Heavy rainfall last year impacted only 17 farmers in this region.
The rains damaged 4.8 hectares of agricultural land in Dharbandora. The estimated crop loss here amounts to Rs 2.8 lakh, significantly lower than in other parts of the state.
The assembly session discussion highlighted both the challenges faced by Goa's farmers and the ongoing efforts to provide relief through established government schemes.
