In a significant development for urban infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi conducted a detailed inspection of the Thiruverumbur Water Supply Improvement Scheme (WSIS) on Wednesday. This crucial project is designed to enhance water accessibility for areas recently incorporated into the Trichy Corporation, marking a major step forward in public utility services.
Project Scope and Financial Backing
The ambitious scheme, developed at a substantial cost of Rs 63.7 crore, has received financial support from the German Development Bank, highlighting international collaboration in local development initiatives. Minister Poyyamozhi emphasized that the project is set to benefit approximately 88,000 residents across five specific wards, addressing long-standing water supply challenges in the region.
Technical Specifications and Capacity
Engineered to draw an impressive 27 million litres per day (MLD), the water supply scheme possesses the capacity to serve six wards, specifically wards 38 through 43. The Trichy Corporation has recently initiated trial runs for the project, including the operation of a newly constructed pumping station at Kambarasampettai. These trials are critical for ensuring the system's reliability and efficiency before full-scale implementation.
Expanded Coverage for Amalgamated Areas
With the commencement of these trial operations, the government has assured the provision of piped drinking water to 19,343 households in previously underserved regions. These areas include the erstwhile Thiruverumbur town panchayat and the panchayat areas of Pappakurichi, Ellakudi, Keela Kalkandarkottai, and Alathur, all of which were amalgamated with the Trichy Corporation back in 2011. This move aims to bridge the infrastructure gap that has persisted since the amalgamation.
Infrastructure Enhancements and Storage Solutions
To support the enhanced water distribution network, significant infrastructure upgrades have been undertaken. Minister Poyyamozhi detailed that eight new overhead water tanks have been constructed, alongside the redevelopment of three existing overhead tanks. These facilities are strategically designed to store and supply water not only to residential households but also to commercial properties within the Thiruverumbur assembly constituency, ensuring comprehensive coverage and sustainability.
The inspection by Minister Poyyamozhi underscores the state government's commitment to improving essential services and addressing the water needs of growing urban populations.
