Smart Meter System Triggers Widespread Power Disconnections in Uttar Pradesh
Electricity supply to nearly 76,785 smart prepaid consumers across Uttar Pradesh was abruptly cut off on Friday afternoon, as their meters automatically disconnected due to negative balances. Officials confirmed that the disconnections were system-triggered, but the move sparked a wave of complaints from affected residents.
Automatic Disconnections Amid Technical Issues
According to a senior official speaking on condition of anonymity, the outages occurred automatically because prepaid meters are programmed to cut supply once the balance drops below zero. "It happened automatically… we had planned to delay disconnections until after Holi," the official revealed, highlighting the unfortunate timing of the incident.
However, the situation quickly escalated when numerous consumers with positive balances also reported unexpected power cuts. These additional outages were attributed to technical glitches in the meter update system, compounding the frustration among users.
High Complaint Volumes from Key Areas
The highest number of complaints originated from Noida and Ghaziabad, two densely populated regions in the state. Residents expressed anger over the sudden loss of electricity, particularly during a period when many were preparing for the Holi festival.
Avadhesh Kumar Verma, chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad, strongly criticized the timing of the disconnections. He labeled the action as "wrong and insensitive," emphasizing the inconvenience caused to thousands of households.
Broader Implications and Consumer Backlash
This incident has raised significant concerns about the reliability of smart meter technology and its implementation in the state. Key points include:
- The automatic disconnection feature, while designed for efficiency, led to widespread disruptions.
- Technical failures in the update system exacerbated the problem, affecting even those with adequate balances.
- Consumer advocacy groups are calling for improved safeguards and better communication from authorities.
As Uttar Pradesh continues to roll out smart meters as part of broader energy management initiatives, this event underscores the need for robust technical support and contingency planning to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
