Shillong Volunteer Earns Prestigious Republic Day Invitation

Iarisha Kharbhoi, a dedicated Aapda Mitra volunteer from East Khasi Hills district, has received a special honor. She has been invited as a guest to attend this year's Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. This invitation recognizes her outstanding dedication and selfless contributions to disaster management in her community.

Grassroots Disaster Management Champion

Kharbhoi serves as a trained volunteer and master trainer under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme. She has played a vital role in strengthening disaster preparedness and response at the grassroots level. Her work with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has been particularly significant.

She consistently serves as a resource person in various training programs. These programs cover essential skills like search and rescue operations, first aid administration, and mock drills. Her trainees include youth, students, security personnel, and community members across East Khasi Hills.

Exemplary Service During Emergencies

Kharbhoi's commitment became especially evident during the October 2023 fire at Thana Road in Police Bazaar, Shillong. Despite facing restrictions, she actively assisted in multiple critical operations.

  • She helped with evacuation procedures
  • She managed relief camp operations
  • She distributed essential supplies to affected people

Her voluntary service continued for two full weeks following the incident. She even took on night duties to ensure continuous support for the community.

Building Long-Term Community Resilience

Beyond immediate emergency response, Kharbhoi has focused on capacity building. She has contributed to school safety programs and NCC camps. She has also led awareness initiatives throughout her district.

These efforts ensure the long-term sustainability of disaster preparedness in local communities. Her work creates lasting impact beyond individual emergencies.

Recognition for Grassroots Volunteers

The Republic Day invitation represents fitting recognition for Kharbhoi's invaluable service. It also highlights the crucial role played by Aapda Mitra volunteers nationwide. These volunteers help build a more resilient nation through their daily efforts.

The invitation particularly emphasizes the dedication of grassroots volunteers from Meghalaya. These individuals continue serving society with remarkable courage, compassion, and commitment.

Growing Pool of Disaster Management Resources

According to DDMA records, East Khasi Hills district has significantly expanded its volunteer network. The district trained 202 Aapda Mitra volunteers during 2022-23. An additional 600 volunteers received training during 2025-26.

This expansion creates a strong pool of resources for disaster management. It ensures communities have trained responders ready for emergencies. Kharbhoi's recognition may inspire more volunteers to join this important initiative.
