In a significant boost for urban infrastructure in Goa, Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane announced a major financial allocation for the port town of Vasco da Gama. The announcement came during a public event on Saturday, where the minister detailed plans under the central government's flagship scheme.
Massive Funding Injection for Vasco's Development
Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane declared that a sum of Rs 150 crore has been officially sanctioned for Vasco under the Smart Cities Mission. This substantial funding is set to transform the city's landscape and services. Rane addressed a large gathering at the inauguration ceremony of the much-anticipated new fish market and the recently refurbished footpaths and drainage systems along Swatantra Path and F L Gomes Road.
Providing context to the new allocation, the minister noted that the Urban Development Ministry and the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) have already sanctioned Rs 50 crore for Vasco in previous phases. The fresh infusion of Rs 150 crore marks a pivotal step forward in the comprehensive plan to develop Vasco into a modern, efficient smart city. The funds are part of the centrally sponsored Smart Cities Mission, aimed at improving core infrastructure and quality of life.
Health Infrastructure Gets a Priority Boost
During the event, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho raised concerns regarding the lack of amenities and the need for more staff at the Chicalim sub-district hospital. In his response, Rane, who also holds the health portfolio, assured immediate action. The health department will soon appoint specialist doctors and additional staff, and provide the latest medical equipment to better cater to patients' needs.
Rane emphasized the critical role of the Chicalim sub-district hospital, which serves the entire Mormugao taluka. He acknowledged that enhancing staff strength and upgrading equipment are urgent requirements to meet the growing healthcare demands of the region.
Inauguration of Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandir
Earlier in the day, Minister Rane inaugurated the Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandir (UAAM) at the new market complex in Headland-Sada. This facility has been constructed under the central Ayushman Bharat initiative, which aims to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar, highlighting the collaborative effort towards public welfare.
The series of announcements and inaugurations signal a focused push by the state government to accelerate development in Vasco and the wider Mormugao region. The combination of smart city funds and healthcare upgrades is expected to significantly improve the living standards and economic prospects for local residents.
