70-Year-Old Water Tank Demolished in Ahmedabad's Sarangpur After Safety Concerns

An over 70-year-old overhead water tank in Sarangpur, old Ahmedabad, was brought down on Thursday. The demolition followed a declaration of the tank as unsafe in August 2025 due to its dilapidated condition.

Demolition Process and Details

Workers used a heavy-duty crane with a 200-tonne capacity and a JCB machine to lift and demolish the tank. The operation took place overnight to minimize disruption.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ramya Bhatt explained the process. "Using a 200-tonne capacity crane, the JCB machine was pulled overnight on the water tank," she said. "The tank demolition is almost done and will be followed by the demolition of pillars in the next two days."

Bhatt noted that the water supply from this tank was stopped in October 2025. The civic body made alternate water supply arrangements for residents at that time.

Unique Demolition Approach

This demolition required a special method. Normally, dilapidated overhead water tanks are brought down by simply breaking their pillars. However, this tank's placement posed a challenge.

"Looking at its placement with roads on all three sides, we had to use a crane and JCB machine for a controlled demolition," Bhatt added. This approach ensured safety and prevented damage to surrounding areas.

Future Plans for the Site

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani announced plans for a new water tank. "A new overhead water tank will be constructed behind this existing one," he stated.

The old tank had a 15-litre capacity. The new construction aims to improve water infrastructure in the Sarangpur area.

Key Points of the Operation

  • The tank was over 70 years old and declared unsafe in August 2025.
  • Demolition used a 200-tonne crane and JCB machine overnight.
  • Water supply was halted in October 2025 with alternatives provided.
  • Pillar demolition will complete in the next two days.
  • A new water tank is planned for construction behind the old site.

The successful demolition marks a step in updating Ahmedabad's aging water infrastructure. Residents can expect improved facilities once the new tank is built.
