Mohali Municipal Corporation Prioritizes Civic Improvements in Upcoming Meeting
The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) is gearing up to address pressing civic concerns with a renewed focus on enhancing sanitation, removing hazardous trees, and repairing pothole-ridden roads. Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu announced these priorities on Friday, highlighting the urgent need for action to improve public safety and infrastructure.
Key Agenda for February 9 Meeting
A crucial MC meeting is scheduled for February 9, where key civic issues will be discussed in detail. The main agenda items include the deteriorating sanitation system, the risks posed by unsafe trees, and the increasing number of potholes across the city. This meeting aims to formulate concrete, time-bound steps to strengthen core civic services and ensure resident safety.
Sanitation System Under Review
Sanitation arrangements will undergo a thorough review during the meeting. Councillors have repeatedly raised concerns over filth accumulation on main roads, internal B-roads, and market areas. Currently, a private agency handles the cleaning of these stretches, but complaints about poor work performance have been on the rise.
Mayor Sidhu stated that the contractor's performance will be closely examined, and appropriate action is expected to be taken to address the shortcomings. The goal is to ensure cleaner public spaces and more efficient waste management.
Addressing Dangerous Trees
Excessively tall, dried, or dangerously leaning trees have become a serious concern in Mohali. During a recent storm, several trees were uprooted, causing damage to vehicles and electricity poles and disrupting power supply for up to 72 hours in some parts of the city. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported.
Since trimming or cutting trees requires permission from the forest department, officials from the department have been invited to the meeting to facilitate timely decisions. This proactive approach aims to mitigate risks and prevent future incidents.
Pothole Repair and Road Maintenance
The civic body will also take up the issue of pothole repair. Mayor Sidhu mentioned that a proposal will be discussed to ensure regular monitoring of roads so that potholes—whether big or small—are filled promptly. This measure is intended to prevent accidents and further damage to vehicles and infrastructure.
The option of assigning the work to a private company may also be explored to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in road maintenance.
Additional Review of Drainage Pipelines
In addition to the main agenda items, the meeting will review drainage pipelines laid for rainwater disposal in Phase 11. This review is part of a broader effort to improve urban infrastructure and address waterlogging issues.
Residents of Mohali are hopeful that the upcoming meeting will lead to significant improvements in civic services. With a focus on sanitation, tree safety, and road conditions, the MC aims to create a safer and more livable environment for all.
