Former WWE star John Cena has made an unexpected comment related to his illustrious career and legacy. The 17-time World Champion has revealed what he wants from his WWE legacy to be after retiring from in-ring competition. The Cenation Leader mentioned that he hopes future stars become so important that fans eventually forget him and move on to embrace the new generation.
Cena's Surprising Wish for His Legacy
In a recent interview, Cena shared his thoughts, reflecting on his decades-long career and the legacy he left behind after stepping away from the ring last year. He said that his ultimate goal was to leave WWE in a better place than he found it. John Cena believes that fans will eventually forget his legacy to embrace new stars. He made it clear he is not walking away from wrestling and revealed that he is still finding different ways to contribute behind the scenes.
Mentoring and Behind-the-Scenes Work
Cena revealed that he is currently involved in mentoring talent and staying involved with the company through organizational work. He called WWE his family and looks forward to contributing to WWE's long-term growth and helping shape its future. In a new interview with Good Housekeeping, the Cenation Leader said, “My goal for my stay in the business is to leave it better than I found it—and my résumé is a byproduct of that. I know none of us live forever. Nobody remembers anything. People forget about me.”
He further added, “So, my hope for the future is that people forget about me. If [the new WWE] stars have enough gravity, have enough relevance, they should be the ones influencing the audience, the people, in the arena. That is my hope, amazingly—that people forget.”
Final Match and WrestleMania Hosting
After retiring from in-ring wrestling, Cena was the official host at WrestleMania 42 in 2026, which took place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. During his retirement tour, Cena featured against WWE legends like Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, and Gunther. He competed in his final WWE match against Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13, 2025, ending his glorious career.
