Mangaluru Deputy Commissioner Orders Pre-Monsoon Silt Clearance to Combat Waterlogging

In a proactive move to address anticipated monsoon challenges, Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV has directed Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) officials to implement swift measures to prevent artificial flooding and waterlogging across the city. The directive comes as several areas are predicted to face significant inconvenience due to blocked drainage systems during the upcoming rainy season.

Immediate Action on Drain and Channel Maintenance

During a crucial meeting held on Thursday, DC Darshan HV, who also serves as the administrator of the MCC, emphasized the urgency of clearing silt from the city's major drains, known locally as rajakaluve, and stormwater channels. He instructed officials to undertake this work promptly, stressing the importance of public cooperation to ensure its success.

MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik outlined the corporation's pre-monsoon preparations, revealing plans to initiate silt removal across all wards starting in March. This extensive project will cover approximately 50 kilometers of major drains and main channels connected to the stormwater network. Naik confirmed that the tender process for this critical work has already been launched.

Public Participation and Community Concerns

In a bid to enhance efficiency, the MCC has invited suggestions from the public and various organizations on managing the silt removal process systematically. Commissioner Naik encouraged active public participation during the execution phase, highlighting the collaborative effort needed to mitigate flooding risks.

However, the issue of artificial flooding is not new to Mangaluru. Residents in densely populated areas such as Malemar, Nekkila, and Kottara Chowki recently staged a demonstration, voicing their frustration over a decade-old demand for effective flood prevention measures. They warned of intensifying protests if their concerns remain unaddressed.

Additionally, citizens from several other wards have echoed these demands, urging the urban local body to ensure the free flow of stormwater drains during the monsoon. This collective outcry underscores the pressing need for the MCC's planned interventions to be implemented effectively and transparently.

As the monsoon approaches, the focus remains on whether these directives will translate into tangible improvements, alleviating the long-standing waterlogging issues that have plagued Mangaluru's residents during heavy rains.
