Madurai Urged to Create Special Needs Park in Balarangapuram

Madurai: The Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) has formally requested the Madurai Corporation to transform the Barrister George Joseph Park in Balarangapuram into a park exclusively designed for individuals with special needs. The association submitted a petition to Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar and Madurai South MLA M M Gopison, emphasizing the current poor state of the park and advocating for its redevelopment as an inclusive recreational space.

The park currently suffers from significant neglect, featuring broken play equipment, sparse vegetation, and overall inadequate maintenance. Association members pointed out that the absence of a gate and security measures has led to misuse of the premises, while the surrounding area is frequently used for illegal waste dumping.

Proposed Features and Benefits

A Balamurugan, district president of TARATDAC, highlighted that the proposed facility would serve nearly 3,000 differently abled individuals in the area. “People with special needs in the city lack sufficient accessible outdoor spaces, which confines many to their homes. The park is envisioned as a peaceful, stress-free environment offering psychological relief and relaxation,” he stated.

The association has proposed installing physiotherapy equipment, mobility aids, sensory and cognitive training tools, and color-coded learning facilities for people with intellectual disabilities. Balamurugan noted that the park would be modeled after the special needs park in Madurai North but would offer additional therapy sessions and extended operating hours.

Call for Action

In a petition submitted to Madurai Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar and Madurai South MLA M M Gopison, the association formally sought the conversion of Barrister George Joseph Park into a dedicated park for people with special needs. The proposal underscores the urgent need for inclusive recreational infrastructure in the city.
