Lucknow Municipal Corporation Embraces Ahmedabad's Storm-Water Strategy
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation has decided to implement the Ahmedabad model of storm-water management. This move aims to solve the persistent problems of waterlogging and clogged drains across the city.
New Parallel Drainage System Planned
Under this ambitious plan, officials will develop a parallel drainage system. This new infrastructure will carry rainwater separately from the existing sewer and drainage lines.
The primary focus will be on areas that frequently experience waterlogging. By separating rainwater from sewage, the corporation hopes to reduce pressure on the current network.
Addressing Long-Standing Complaints
This decision comes after repeated complaints from numerous localities. Residents have endured significant inconvenience during monsoon seasons.
The current system often fails when drains must handle both sewage and rainwater simultaneously. This dual burden leads to frequent choking and overflow incidents.
How the New System Will Work
Municipal officials explained the mechanics of the proposed solution. New storm-water drains will run alongside the current drainage lines.
During heavy showers, rainwater will flow directly through these dedicated channels. This separation should prevent backflow, overflow, and regular blockages.
The improved discharge capacity is expected to make maintenance much easier for municipal workers.
Learning from Gujarat's Experience
The inspiration for this initiative came from a recent study visit to Gujarat. On January 5, a team of corporators and officials traveled to Ahmedabad.
Mayor Sushma Kharkwal and Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar led this delegation. They examined drainage and waste management systems in detail.
The team reviewed two key projects: the Sabarmati riverfront development and the area-based development model implemented under Ahmedabad's Smart City mission.
Next Steps and Additional Safety Measures
Officials will now prepare a detailed report based on their observations. This document will outline specific plans for separating sewer and drainage lines in Lucknow.
The report will also address covering open drains throughout the city. The mayor will receive this comprehensive submission for review and approval.
In a related safety initiative, the corporation identified more than two hundred open drains that present risks to citizens. Authorities have approved approximately twenty crore rupees to cover these hazardous openings.
The entire project represents a significant investment in urban infrastructure. Lucknow residents can anticipate noticeable improvements in drainage efficiency and reduced waterlogging during future monsoon seasons.
