KMDA Launches Major Road Repair Project in Howrah
The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority has initiated a significant road repair and upgradation project in Howrah. This initiative covers 26 different road stretches under the jurisdiction of the Howrah Municipal Corporation. The total cost for this extensive work amounts to Rs 26 crore.
Project Details and Scope
These road stretches combine to form a total length of approximately 14 kilometers. Officials have clarified that this repair work falls outside the state government's ongoing 'Pathashree' road repair scheme. This indicates a separate, focused effort to address specific infrastructure needs in the Howrah area.
Several of these roads are receiving upgrades using interlocking concrete paver blocks. This modern construction method typically offers better durability and easier maintenance compared to traditional road surfaces.
Key Roads Under Repair
Important stretches currently undergoing repairs include:
- Benaras Road
- Shalimar Workshop Area Road
- B Garden Ghat Road
- Andul First Bylane near Kazibagan
- Salkia School Road near the HIT bridge
- Dharmatala Road from the GT Road crossing to the Belur Road-Dharmatala More junction
These locations represent some of the busiest and most critical routes in the Howrah municipal area.
Background and Safety Concerns
The need for these repairs became particularly urgent following heavy monsoon showers last year. These rains created large craters on multiple roads, posing serious hazards to both vehicles and pedestrians.
In response to growing safety concerns, the Howrah City Traffic Police reported a troubling statistic. They documented a 35% increase in accidents directly related to poor road conditions. Multiple instances occurred where pedestrians and commuters suffered injuries after falling into potholes.
Planning and Implementation
Officials from KMDA's roads and bridges sector conducted a joint inspection with the HMC road department in June of last year. This collaborative effort aimed to identify stretches requiring immediate attention and urgent repairs.
Actual repair work began towards the end of last year. Since then, several stretches have already been successfully upgraded. The project continues to progress as authorities work to complete all 26 road sections.
This comprehensive road repair initiative demonstrates KMDA's commitment to improving urban infrastructure and enhancing public safety in the Howrah region. By addressing these critical road conditions, authorities hope to reduce accident rates and provide smoother, safer travel for all road users.
