High-Level Meeting Addresses 167 Accident Blackspots in Karnataka's Belagavi Region
A crucial high-level meeting was convened on Wednesday evening in Belagavi to tackle the pressing issue of accident blackspots identified by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The gathering took place at the conference hall of the superintendent engineer within the Public Works Department (PWD) in Belagavi.
Key Attendees and Leadership
The meeting was chaired by District Minister Satish Jarkiholi, underscoring the government's commitment to road safety. Notable attendees included KSRTC Vice-Chairman Sunil Hanumanavar, Managing Director Priyanka M, Chief Engineer (Roads & Buildings – North) Shivanand Naik, along with senior PWD officers and officials from the KSRTC safety and awareness department.
Focus on Recurring Accidents and Road Deficiencies
Discussions centered on recurring accidents that are often attributed to road deficiencies and inadequate safety measures. KSRTC officials presented comprehensive details regarding 167 accident blackspots that have been identified across six revenue districts under its jurisdiction. These blackspots are areas with a high frequency of accidents, and the officials also provided recommended remedial measures to address these hazardous locations.
Action Plans for National and State Highways
Of the 167 blackspots, 49 are located on national highways. Minister Jarkiholi assured that this matter would be escalated to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, led by Nitin Gadkari, for necessary intervention. For the remaining 118 blackspots on state and district highways, the minister issued clear instructions to PWD officials. They were directed to prepare both short-term and long-term action plans and to initiate corrective measures promptly to enhance road safety.
Specific Directives for Highway Safety
Taking note of KSRTC's survey of the newly built Kagawad-Gotur highway stretch, Minister Jarkiholi ordered a joint re-survey. He directed officials to ensure the establishment of safe halting points for both the general public and KSRTC buses. Additionally, the minister instructed PWD officials to construct bus bays and passenger shelters, as well as improve junctions at locations where KSRTC has adequate land available.
Addressing Belagavi's High Accident Rates
Expressing deep concern over Belagavi district's high ranking in road accident numbers, Minister Jarkiholi emphasized that the implementation of KSRTC's recommendations could significantly reduce fatalities and injuries. To strengthen inter-departmental coordination and ensure ongoing oversight, he directed that similar joint review meetings be conducted regularly at the district level.
Innovative Proposals for Night-Time Safety
During the meeting, officials from the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) proposed the installation of solar and flashing lights at rural intersections. This initiative aims to improve night-time visibility and enhance overall road safety. Minister Jarkiholi responded positively to this proposal, highlighting a forward-thinking approach to mitigating accident risks.
In summary, this high-level meeting marks a significant step towards addressing road safety challenges in Karnataka, with a focused effort on reducing accidents through coordinated action and innovative solutions.
