Karnataka has introduced stringent age verification rules at all liquor-selling establishments to combat underage drinking, following a study that revealed high rates of adolescent alcohol consumption. The new measures require every outlet to verify government-issued identification before allowing entry or serving alcohol, with owners held directly responsible for any violations.
New Age Verification Rules
All establishments that serve alcohol must now check valid government-issued IDs, such as Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, or driving licenses, before granting entry or serving customers. Owners who fail to comply will face severe penalties, including possible suspension or cancellation of their liquor licenses. The rules aim to ensure that no individual under the legal drinking age of 18 gains access to alcohol.
Police Enforcement Mandate
The police department has been tasked with ensuring that all liquor outlets install and maintain functional CCTV cameras to monitor compliance. Officers are also required to coordinate with schools, parents, and local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of underage drinking. The government has warned of strict legal action, including fines and imprisonment, for any establishment or individual found violating the rules.
Health Risks Highlighted
The decision comes in response to a study that found one in three adolescents surveyed in the state were at risk of health issues linked to alcohol or tobacco use. This rate exceeds the national average, prompting urgent action. The study highlighted that early exposure to alcohol can lead to long-term physical and mental health problems, including liver damage, addiction, and impaired brain development.
Legal Drinking Age
Karnataka's legal drinking age remains 18, and the new rules are designed to reinforce this limit through strict enforcement. The government has emphasized that the measures are not intended to restrict responsible drinking by adults but to protect minors from the harmful effects of alcohol.
With these steps, Karnataka aims to create a safer environment for its youth and reduce the prevalence of underage drinking across the state.
