In a proactive move to combat severe traffic congestion, the Jaipur traffic police have rolled out a temporary plan to adjust signal timings at major intersections across the city. This initiative, effective from Sunday afternoon, targets the peak tourist season rush on crucial corridors like Delhi Road, Agra Road, and MI Road.
What Prompted the Traffic Plan?
Officials stated that the decision followed the conversion of the stretch from Jaigarh t-point to Delhi Road on Amer Road into a one-way route since Saturday morning. This change significantly increased the volume of vehicles on the parallel arteries of Delhi Road, Agra Road, and MI Road. This marks the first time Jaipur police have altered signal timings specifically for the tourist influx.
"Since the one-way system on Amer Road diverted more traffic onto these key roads, we tweaked the signal timings at a few crossings to manage the extra rush," explained a traffic official. The official confirmed that the directive came from Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal.
Key Changes in Signal Timings
The most notable adjustment is at the busy intersection of Agra Road, MI Road, and Sanganeri Gate. Here, the green signal phase has been extended from morning until evening for vehicles moving from Transport Nagar or Moti Doongri Road towards Sanganeri Gate.
This strategic extension serves a dual purpose:
- It facilitates smoother entry for traffic from Delhi Road and Agra Road into the Walled City area.
- It allows a clearer flow for vehicles intending to proceed straight towards Yadgar Tiraha on Tonk Road.
Broader Efforts for Smooth Traffic Flow
The signal tweaks are part of a larger effort to ensure seamless movement during the high-traffic period from late November to early January. On Saturday evening, a joint team comprising the Jaipur traffic police, district police, and the municipal corporation conducted an anti-encroachment drive.
This operation cleared obstructions on the main roads of the Walled City, the Amer area, and along the newly diverted routes. A senior official noted that while seasonal diversions are routine in Jaipur, the need for new measures arose due to a substantial increase in the volume of city vehicles over the past year.
Prior to this, acting on the Police Commissioner's instructions, the traffic department had already rationalized signal timings at several other major intersections across Jaipur to optimize traffic flow citywide.
