Guwahati Municipal Corporation Launches Pioneering Smart House Numbering Initiative
In a significant move towards urban modernization, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) officially launched its inaugural 'smart house numbering system' on Saturday. This groundbreaking initiative represents a major leap forward in transforming the city's residential infrastructure from a manual framework to a technology-driven addressing mechanism, fundamentally designed to advance overall urban management and public service delivery.
Inauguration and Core Technology
The program was inaugurated in the city's Birubari area by GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania. During the ceremony, Mayor Sarania emphasized that this initiative marks a critical transition for Guwahati. "Every residential unit will be assigned a unique house number," he stated. "The physical plate will be embedded with a QR code that is directly linked to a comprehensive, GIS-based smart identification platform. These digital plates are engineered to function as a singular, authoritative point of reference for both citizens and municipal authorities, thereby drastically improving accuracy in property identification and the efficiency of service delivery."
Operational Benefits and Municipal Vision
Municipal officials outlined the extensive benefits of the new system. It is projected to significantly strengthen property tax management, streamline the delivery of various civic services, and enhance long-term urban planning by establishing a reliable, searchable digital database of all residential units across the city. The QR-enabled plates will empower authorized GMC staff to instantly verify property details on-site using mobile devices. Concurrently, residents stand to gain from faster grievance redressal mechanisms and improved access to municipal services.
GMC Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phookan elaborated on the strategic vision behind the project. "The unique house number plating initiative is the cornerstone of our mission to modernize Guwahati," Commissioner Phookan declared. "By integrating advanced technology directly into our residential infrastructure, we are creating a transparent, efficient, and accountable system. This system is designed to benefit every taxpayer while simultaneously streamlining core municipal operations for greater effectiveness."
Rollout Strategy and Public Engagement
The launch event was held at the Udaypur Kali Mandir and was attended by key GMC officials including the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Commissioner, and local ward councillors. The initial phase of the rollout commenced from Ward 29, with a structured plan to expand the system in subsequent phases until all wards across the city are comprehensively covered.
To ensure smooth adoption and public cooperation, GMC officials confirmed that the technical rollout will be accompanied by robust public awareness campaigns and dedicated on-ground support teams. These teams will assist residents with the transition, answer queries, and facilitate the integration of the new smart addressing system into daily civic life, ensuring the initiative's success and widespread acceptance.
